Every year on the 30th of July, the world comes together to celebrate the International Day of Friendship, A United Nations initiative that highlights the power of friendship in fostering peace, understanding and solidarity among people and cultures. In 2025 this day takes on even greater significance as communities across the globe seek unity in the face of ongoing challenges.
Friendship is more than just a personal connection—it’s a powerful force for social harmony. Whether between individuals, communities, or nations, friendships help:
- Bridge cultural divides
- Promote mutual respect and empathy
- Encourage dialogue and cooperation
- Support mental and emotional well-being
In a world often marked by conflict and division, friendship offers a path toward healing and hope.
The United Nations proclaimed the International Day of Friendship in 2011, inspired by the idea that friendship between peoples, countries, and cultures can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities. The UN encourages governments, organizations, and individuals to hold events and activities that promote reconciliation, inclusion, and understanding.
I personally have been blessed with friendships that I have had over my many years on this wonderful planet, from school friends whom I still meet and interact with on a regular basis, to many work colleagues that I have met along the way and have the honour of calling friends.
On some of my darkest times they have kept me sane and have always kept in touch, and I will always be there for them if they should ever need me.
Here are a few simple yet meaningful ways to mark the day:
- Reach out to an old friend and reconnect.
- Write a thank-you note to someone who’s made a difference in your life.
- Host a multicultural dinner and invite friends from different backgrounds.
- Volunteer for a cause that brings people together.
- Share a story on social media about a friendship that changed your life.
As we celebrate the International Day of Friendship 2025, let’s remember that every act of kindness, every bridge we build, and every hand we extend in friendship contributes to a more peaceful and compassionate world.
So take of yourself and where possible keep in touch.
Your friend, Paul.
