Why Minding Yourself Matters This Heart Awareness Month

September is Irish Heart Month, a perfect reminder that our hearts do so much for us, every single day! Taking care of your heart is essential not just for longevity, but for your everyday quality of life. Even small changes in your routine can make a big difference, so it’s worth taking the time to take care of yourself and take proactive steps towards protecting your heart.

You don’t need to change everything overnight. Just a few small habits can go a long way. Below are five steps you can take to reduce your risk and support better heart health, no drastic changes required!

  • Get Moving with Walking! Walking is one of the simplest and most effective ways to improve heart health. It can be a real game changer! If you can, try fitting in a 30 minute walk most days. Walking helps improve circulation, lowers blood pressure, and boosts your overall cardiovascular fitness. Could you squeeze in a 30 minute walk during lunch or maybe after dinner?
  • Eat Heart Healthy Foods!  Why not throw a handful of spinach in with your lunch? Spinach is packed with antioxidants and fibre, both of which play a role in lowering cholesterol and protecting your heart from damage.
  • Stay Hydrated! Drinking enough water supports your heart by helping maintain good blood flow and reducing strain. Try to drink 6 to 8 glasses of water daily.
  • Cut Down on Salt! Too much salt can raise your blood pressure. Next time you’re out shopping, take a quick look at food labels and check for salt content.
  • Get Enough Sleep! Sleepless nights aren’t just tiring, they can take a toll on your heart too. Prioritising 7 to 8 hours of quality sleep each night can make a real difference. (And yes, this is easier said than done!)

Why This Matters, and When to Act Fast

While prevention is key, it’s just as important to recognise the signs of a heart attack or stroke when they occur. Acting quickly can save your life or someone else’s and greatly improve the chances of recovery.

Watch out for the following symptoms:

  • Chest pain or discomfort
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sudden weakness or numbness in the face, arm, or leg
  • Confusion, difficulty speaking, or trouble understanding speech
  • A sudden, severe headache with no known cause

If you or someone near you experiences any of these, call the emergency services immediately.
