Happy International Day of Happiness!

Today, we recognise the importance of happiness and well-being for people worldwide. It is a day to focus on positivity, spread kindness, and share joy with those around us. Happiness is not just a personal pursuit—it is a collective effort that can make a real difference in our relationships, communities and workplace.

We don’t have to be afraid to compliment our colleagues. A simple acknowledgment of their hard work or achievements can go a long way. We should not be shy about announcing our own successes or those of our teammates to the world and feeling proud of what we’ve accomplished together.

At the same time, it’s essential to recognise that everyone is in different circumstances. Sometimes, all it takes to brighten someone’s day is a kind word, a compliment, or a small act of encouragement. Just knowing that someone is there for us—in happy times and in difficult moments—can have a profound impact on our well-being.

When I was together with a volunteering group, Limerick Suicide Watch, I was overwhelmed seeing people struggling to understand their value and find the happiness. Sometimes, all it took was just a smile, just a hello, or just a listening ear to hear about their problems, issues, and struggles. And sometimes, all it was—was someone being there and simply saying, “I care about you.” On a daily basis, we often forget about these simple things and don’t realize that the people next to us need those little moments of happiness, that magic dust. All they need is a friend, a colleague, or a partner being there for them, showing care and kindness.

So today, let’s make a conscious effort to spread happiness. Start with small things, simple things, even silly things.

At work:
• Share a kind note or message of appreciation with a colleague – write it, sing it, draw it in colour!
• Invite your colleague you spend the least time together for a lunch break together.

Outside of work:
• Perform a random act of kindness – pay for someone’s coffee or tea in a café.
• Reconnect with an old friend by sending a thoughtful message or making a phone call.

At home:
• Plan a fun activity, like a movie night or cooking a meal together.
• Take time for self-care – read a book or enjoy a bath.

Happiness is contagious, and it starts with us. Let’s take the opportunity today—and every day—to uplift each other, spread kindness, and make the world a little brighter, one smile at a time. 😊
