by Maria Kelly, Modig Corporate Services Ltd

National Bike Week, running from the 10th to the 18th of May, is the perfect reminder of how something as simple as hopping on a bike can make a big difference to our health, our happiness, and the environment. Whether you’re cycling to work, exploring your local greenway, or just taking a spin around the neighbourhood, every ride counts.

While I wouldn’t call myself a daily cyclist, I do enjoy getting out cycling whenever I can. It’s one of those activities that feels good from the moment you start and there are so many benefits associated for your health and the environment. I’ve summarised just a few of those benefits below 😊

The Health Benefits of Cycling

  • Better Heart Health: Regular cycling strengthens your heart, lowering the risk of heart disease and stroke.
  • Improved Mental Wellbeing: Exercise releases endorphins, helping to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression.
  • Joint Friendly Movement: Great for people with arthritis or recovering from injury, as it’s easy on the knees and hips.
  • Stronger Immune System: Staying active helps build resilience and keep illness at bay.
  • A Longer, Healthier Life: Even short, regular rides can contribute to increased longevity and quality of life.

Good for the Planet Too

Swapping the car for a bike even just occasionally is a powerful way to cut down on emissions. Fewer cars on the road means less air pollution, less noise, and a more pleasant environment. Cycling is a simple, sustainable way to be part of the climate solution.

Stay Safe on the Road!

Feeling confident and staying safe is key to enjoying your time on the bike. Here are a few important reminders:

  • Wear a Helmet: Make sure it fits well and is properly fastened.
  • Check Your Bike: Keep your brakes working and your tyres inflated.
  • Be Seen: Wear bright clothes, especially at dawn or dusk, and use lights and reflectors.
  • Know the Rules: Obey traffic signals, use hand signals, and ride with traffic.
  • Stay Aware: Keep your eyes and ears open and avoid distractions.

If it’s been a while since you last rode a bike, National Bike Week is the perfect time to get back into it.

Here are a few ideas to get started:

Whether it’s your first time out cycling in years or its part of your daily commute, every pedal makes a difference! Happy Cycling!! 😊🚴♀️
